3.3 - Annotated checklist of the species collected in the current study 

Order Isoptera

At least one unidentified termite species was collected beneath stones in many locations in Wadi As Sebakh and other wadis. Individuals were in high numbers and usually crowded. Termites usually eat wood and are potential pests on plants and stored products made of wood or other materials.

Distribution: Paleotropical element extending to the ponto-mediterranean region (Katbeh and Carapezza, in press).

Remarks: The most common bug in Jordan known almost everywhere anytime of the year. Reported from Jordan by Pericart (1998)

One species of this family was seen infesting False-Fig trees in high numbers.

One species was collected from the reserve.

**Family Dermestidae

Dermestes lardarius Linnaeus (Larder Beetle)

Distribution: Worldwide.

Remarks: Feeds on dead animals in nature. Therefore, these beetles play an important role in decomposing dead animals and facilitating the recycling process of animal material. However, this is a known stored product insect pest. It attacks fur, leather, dried yolk, smoked meat and sausage and chocolate.

Necrobia rufipes de Geer (Copra beetle)

Distribution: Worldwide.

Remarks: Feeds on dead animals in nature. Therefore, these beetles play an important role in decomposing dead animals and facilitating the recycling process of animal material. However, this species is a known stored product insect pest. It attacks oilseed cake and dried coconut meat.

Distribution: East Mediterranean species. Very common in Jordan, especially in the spring, on many kinds of flowers (Bader and Barbero, 1999).

Tropinota squalida pilosa (Brulle)

This species was observed flying in the hot part of the day in Rum village.

Distribution: A Mediterranean and irano-Turanian species. Recorded from Jordan by Miksic (1982).

Remarks: It was collected from many kinds of flowers (Katbeh-Bader and Barbero 1999). Usually large numbers of this species attack fruit trees in early spring.

**Family Carabidae (Ground beetles)

Members of this family are usually active at night and most of them are predators on other arthropods. They have been used extensively in ecological studies (see for example Spence and Niemela 1994).
