Control
grazing in some areas that are facing a high pressure. These areas are:
i.
The northern part of Wadi Um-‘Ishrin, which is highly grazed by
camels.
ii.
Wadi Rumman, which is highly grazed by small livestock, especially
during the spring.
Grazing
in these areas can be controlled by limiting the grazing activities to specific
seasons.
A
better understanding of the Bedouin tribes’ movements is needed. It was
noticed that there was some difference in goat movements recorded by this
study and the tribal movements recorded during the socio-economic survey.
The
main tribe whose movement should be studied is the Zalabia tribe, since the
highest number of livestock was recorded in their zones.
Livestock
counts should be repeated for at least two consecutive years and to be
followed by a routine livestock count every third year. This means that the
next livestock count should take place in April 2002. This should be part of
the overall monitoring program of the protected area.
When
this study is repeated, the seasonal counts should be carried out at the
same times each year. The winter counts should be conducted in December
rather than in January or February.
Carry
out vegetation distribution monitoring program once every five years (next
in spring 2004) in order to monitor the changes caused by grazing in the
vegetation components and coverage.
Establish
a grazing monitoring program in the protected area. Based on the information
collected in this study, several exclosures should be built in the different
parts of the protected area. Each exclosure should have a fenced plot and a
non-fenced control plot in order to compare the effect of grazing on the
vegetation. It is proposed to have exclosures in the following locations:
i.
Northern Wadi Um-‘Ishrin
ii.
Northern Wadi Rumman
iii.
Southern Wadi Marsad (Hadbat Qara)
iv.
Um Mqour
v.
Central Wadi Rum
Woodcutting
is becoming a threat to some parts of the protected area. Some areas that
were visited during the spring stage had lost a lot of their vegetation
cover by the time the winter stage took place. Locals sometimes cut large
amounts of big shrubs by either uprooting them using pick-ups or by cutting
them from the base of the stem. Some of these shrubs are at least 40 years
old. The main shrubs that are facing this threat are the Haloxylon
persicum shrubs in the northern part of Wadi Rumman. Woodcutting should
therefore be controlled as soon as possible. This can be achieved by
creating a link between the protected area’s rangers and the forestry
rangers from the Ministry of Agriculture. The use of propane gas for cooking
and heating purposes should also be encouraged as an alternative to wood.
