5- Methods

The methods used in this survey were interviews, sweeping observation points, and fixed observation points. The aerial survey was delayed, and it is suggested for the near future. These methods were used to cover the whole area both inside and outside of the protected area.

5.1- Interviews

The following points were taken into consideration in choosing people for interviews:

i)   Age.

ii)   Neighboring villages and the number of interviews in each village.

iii)    Professionals (climbers, hunters, chippers).

The aim of this method was to gather information about ungulate distribution, trends of ungulates inside and outside the protected area, and to assess the interaction between ungulates and local people .The interview sheet contained ten questions - two of them were direct questions while the others were indirect (see appendix 1). This method was very helpful because ungulates are the most familiar mammals for locals.

5.2- Sweeping

This method was performed to assess the distribution and habitat use of ungulates in the protected area. Transect routes (sweeping) were done at different sites in the protected area to cover all the ungulate activity sites which were determined through the interviews.

5.3- Fixed Observation Points

The aim of this method was to assess the distribution, habitat use, sex, age class, and group composition of ungulates. The observation points were determined from sweeping and interviews. The area around the point was scanned for about two hours. Some points were scanned in early morning (between 5am and 9am) while others were watched around sunset (between 4pm and 5pm).
