It is urgently recommended that
hunting of ibex be curtailed, especially in the protected area. The tremendous
decline in ibex population is mainly caused by extensive hunting in its natural
habitat. Strict protection laws must be applied to hunters, and heavy
protection programs must take place in the breeding season between September
and December.
*
Because of their importance,
enforcement programs must concentrate on the permanent water sources in the
protected area which helps a lot in ibex protection.
*
Depending on the survey results,
a reintroduction program for ibex is necessary and would be helpful in
conserving the ibex in the area.
*
When using interview methods, it
is useful to have different classes of interviewed people. They can be
classified according to age, sex, and profession (climbers, sheep keepers, and
hunters). This helps a lot in data collection, because the information comes
from different sources and experiences.
*
The best time to study ibex is
the breeding season (the peak is mid-October). Ibex may be observed during this
period as they search for mates.
*
Because ibex are highly
sensitive to disturbance, fixed observation points are not recommended for
surveying them.
*
An aerial survey is highly
recommended because it is the most suitable method to be used in the protected
area and can cover all the sites in a short period of time. This method can
also give a full view of the ibex habitat and population in the protected area
(see Appendix 6).
