Summary
|
The
ungulate baseline survey lasted for a month, from the 15th of
November to the 15th of December 1999 It’s
aim was to determine the status and distribution of the ungulates in the Rum
Protected Area.
Three
animals belonging to the Bovidae family were targeted in this survey. These
species are Capra ibex nubiana, Gazella subgutturosa, and Gazella
dorcas. The fieldwork lasted 30 days and used three different methods,
chosen according to the ecology of the species and the nature of the site.
Results
showed that ibex distribution inside the protected area is limited to the large
and complex mountains where ungulates find safe shelter and bedding areas.
These mountains were found to be Jebal Rum, Um ‘Ishrin, Qattar, and
Khaz’ali. The ibex were also found to be present in other smaller mountains
like Qabr ‘Amra, Al-Judayida, and Al-Barrah. The presence of gazelles is not
well confirmed according to the people who were interviewed but some mentioned
that there are 6-8 individuals of Dorcas gazelles present in Al-Hisswah, far
from the protected area boundaries, where their tracks were seen.
The
most important recommendations include the immediate end to hunting and the
introduction of some groups of ibex that are found in captive breeding programs
in Mujib Nature Reserve. Finally, an aerial survey is highly recommended in
order to give more comprehensive details about the population and habitat use
of ibex.
